Q. 2. What rule hath God given to direct us how we may glorify and enjoy him?
A. The Word of God, which is contained in the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments, is the only rule to direct us how we may glorify and enjoy him.
If the reason you exist is to glorify and enjoy God, that is the big aim in life. Then flowing from that the next most important thing is how do you find out how to do that? It doesn’t come naturally and so we need it revealed to us, we need someone to show us. The Catechism takes us straight to the Bible – The Word of God and tells us that all of the Bible both the Old and New Testament are the only way we can know how we may glorify and enjoy him. Very simply God speaks to us and reveals himself in His Word. Stated negatively without the Bible you cannot know how to live in such a way that brings God glory and you enjoyment. There isn’t another rule, there’s no other way to know God. You would be in the dark and so we are led to thankfulness that God has spoken, in the famous words of Francis Schaeffer ‘he is there and he is not silent’ and so as Christians will be devoted to the Book.
