Q6. How many persons are there in the Godhead?
A. There are 3 persons in the Godhead, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, these three are are one God, the same in substance, equal in power and glory.
We need to be clear we wouldn’t know about this God unless he had revealed himself. We do not know everything about God. He is the Creator, we are his creatures. We cannot fully understand everything there is to know about God and we never will.
Though we cannot know all about him, wonderfully we can still know Him. The bible reveals to us what we need to know. It tells us that God is one but also three. This is the doctrine of the Trinity. We talk about persons and it’s not that that is an adequate description of who God is, but we are scratching around in human language to articulate what our God is like. In the same way that we as persons relate to one another – in God there are three persons – the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.
The Father is God
The Son is God
The Holy Spirit is God
When the catechism talks about substance, it is not speaking of ‘stuff’ or raw material. It is saying that each person of the Trinity is God. The Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit are equal in power and one is not stronger than the other.
There are roles within the Trinity which are attributed to one person of the Godhead but they are not exclusive to them. So in the Benediction we have
the Grace of the Lord Jesus Christ
the Love of God the Father
and the Fellowship of the Holy Spirit.
Each is glorious. All three persons of the Godhead are worthy of our worship and adoration and are to be glorified and enjoyed for ever.
