Q. 8. How doth God execute his decrees?
A. God executeth his decrees in the works of creation and providence.
If God is in control and has a plan, then the next question surely is how does he work that plan out in time and history?
The catechism tells us that he does that in two ways: in the work of Creation and Providence. ‘In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.’ That is how the bible begins. There was a moment when God spoke, and a world that had not existed came into existence. Ever since that moment, God has been sovereignly in control working out his purposes.
God brought about, and is bringing about, in real time, what he had purposed in eternity and in creation.
